With new construction equipment prices on the rise, it seems like you can sell young used equipment for almost the price you paid for it.
A construction equipment auction in Leeds last week revealed a huge demand for good used equipment, with some used machines changing hands for almost the original purchase price.
High residual values were especially evident for telehandlers and mini-excavators.
“Prices for telehandlers and mini-excavators were literally exorbitant, and machines with 17 and 18 plates were bringing in almost new money,” said Euro Auctions sales manager Chris Osborne.
Last week’s Euro Auction Leeds auction saw 4,600 lots sold under the hammer, ranging from brand-new to 48-month-old.
The four-day sale — both online and in person — brought in a total of nearly £39 million. About 60% of the buyers were from the U.K. and the Republic of Ireland — there was a lot of foreign interest, but they were often outbid.
Domestic buyers bought 48% of the lots by value (£18.89 million), with buyers from continental Europe making up a similar percentage (only £18.86 million).
Sales manager Chris Osborne said: “Prices were strong, with the same number of lots for sale as in January 2021. However, at this sale the gavel was £39 million, £10 million more than at the January 2021 sale. bidders were determined to buy new stock.”
He continued: “Prices for telehandlers and mini-excavators were literally exorbitant, with 17- and 18-plate machines bringing in almost new money. With good supply in the 2018 to 2021 range, there were more than 123 excavators and 22 telehandlers. less than four years. As OEMs have raised prices to their dealers three times in the last 18 months, this has had a striking effect on used equipment prices. “.
